Paul Kimura, Designer
Paul Kimura is a designer and furniture builder living and working in Los Angeles. After studying architecture at UC Berkeley, Paul built and restored craftsman style homes in the Bay Area for several years until discovering his love of cooking and transitioning to becoming a chef. Moving into the field of fine dining introduced him to an entirely new set of materials and tools to work with. From the ultimate observation post as a chef, Paul spent years studying the ergonomics that come into play during the rituals of preparing, serving, and appreciating food. Paul continued to build and design throughout his time in the restaurant industry, occasionally collaborating on product design with owners, chefs, and mixologists at restaurants from Napa Valley to Los Angeles.
Years later, Paul inevitably returned to his true love, woodworking. First designing and building furniture for Ross Alan Reclaimed, and then starting his own venture, Paul Kimura Design. Utilizing personalized woodworking vernacular, Paul Kimura Design creates unique functional pieces that transform familiar staples of the dining experience into striking sculptural forms. Paul draws inspiration from classic modernist design and traditional Japanese and Scandinavian woodwork. His work combines impeccable geometry and a sophisticated aesthetic with his unique style that is equally reverent of high design and whimsy.
